Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
